The Lomelino family

had its origins at the city of Lumello, in the north italian province of Lombardy, near Milan. It’s first recorded member is Vassalo da Lumello who migrated to Genoa. There he gave to his children the surname of Lomellini (maybe to remember the region where he came from, La Lomellina).

This family soon became a important family in Genoa and abroad (more coming soon).

Around 1500 two brothers moved to the Portuguese island of Madeira and had posterity. There they served the Portuguese Kings and were granted with the commerce and explotation of sugar and Madeira wine, becoming later suppliers of the Kings of Denmark, Sweden and Italy.

In the middle of the 19th century there were members of the family who converted to Protestantism being forced to leave the family and their beautiful island. They settled in Jamaica, Hawaai and in the US states of Missouri and Illinois. At the end of the 19th century there are also Lomelinos who left to Brazil settling in São Paulo.

During the 20th Century we see that in Portugal the family loses its influence and once more we see family members leaving to the United States (California) and to Belgium.

In my genealogical research, I found many Lomelino’s / Lomellini’s not only in Portugal, Spain and Italy, but also France, the US and all over South America.

I started my Genealogical Research in 1984 and until now I have more than 46.000 names.
